CAMS Overview
CAMS is the Capital Asset Management System. It is the module in DaFIS used to track all items that meet the university
definition of inventorial equipment. CAMS can be also be used to optionally track items under the equipment threshold.
How are assets tracked in CAMS?
CAMS assigns an 11-digit number to each asset:
- the first four digits indicate the calendar year of acquisition,
- the next two digits represent the UC campus code (for Davis, this code is "30"),
- the last five digits indicate the sequential value in which that asset number was assigned in the given calendar year
For example, asset number 20083000456 would represent the 456th asset number assigned at UC Davis in the 2008 calendar year.
What are the CAMS documents?
CAMS contains documents for:
How are asset records updated in CAMS?
CAMS contains a maintenance screen (
Capital Asset Maintenance) for updating information on departmental assets, including serial numbers, location, and received date. This screen is restricted to the
asset representative assigned to the department. The asset representative can also make updates and delegate asset maintenance to other employees using the
Online Asset Maintenance tool.
How often do departments need to complete an equipment inventory?
Departments are required to complete an equipment physical inventory every two years (
see Policy & Procedure Manual 350-55, IV B). There are several CAMS reports in DaFIS Decision Support that can assist with an equipment inventory, including the
Equipment Physical Inventory Lookup (204). See the
step-by-step guide on completing an inventory for more information.
