A. Acquire the AFS Client Software The OpenAFS Client is free open source software.

The latest tested release of the OpenAFS Client (version 1.5.64) can be found at the OpenAFS site:

  • On the OpenAFS site, scroll down until you see 'Downloads for 32-bit or the 64-bit Windows operating systems: Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista.'
  • Select the .MSI version of the software. Save the file to the PC.
B. Install the AFS Software
  1. You need to have administrative privileges on the machine to install the software.
  2. Double-click on the file you downloaded to start the install process.
    • At the Welcome to the OpenAFS for Windows Setup Wizard window, click Next.
    • At the End-User License Agreement window, accept the license agreement and click Next.
    • At the Choose Setup Type window, select Custom.
    • At the Custom Setup window, install only the AFS Client. Note: Do not install the Loopback adapter. Do not install the NetIDMgr Plug-in. Click Next.
    • At the Configure AFS Client window, enter ucdavis.edu for the Default Cell. Change the Integrated logon option to Disable. Leave the other settings at their default. Click Next.
    • At the Options for AFS Credentials window, uncheck Start AFS Credentials at startup. Leave the other settings at their default. Click Next.
    • At the Ready to Install window, click Install.
    • At the Completing the OpenAFS for Windows Setup Wizard, click Finish.
    • When prompted, restart your computer before continuing with the configuration.
