    Q. I am having trouble mapping my Q drive or I am getting an error when I try to start up DaFIS TP indicating that the drive or shortcut is not available. What can I do? Back to Top
    A. Please see our AFS Troubleshooting Guide page.

    Q. When I enter a valid LoginID and password in DaFIS, I get a message in the status bar at the bottom that says, "Database User ID/Password is invalid..." or it just beeps at me. Back to Top
    A. First, try to login on another machine where you are sure that DaFIS is working properly (i.e. other users are able to login on it). If you are unable to log in on any machine, contact the DaFIS Help Desk to get a new password.

If you can log in on another machine, go back to the problem computer. Check the Caps Lock and Num Lock to make sure they are properly set. Then try logging in to the Test database. If you can login to the Test database, you can be confident that the Oracle Client is working and the problem lies somewhere else.

If you know you have the correct login/password but cannot login, there may be a problem with the Oracle Client installation. Sometimes the installation did not copy all of the correct files. In that case, the solution is to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of TP.

Before you do a complete uninstall and reintall, try this common fix:

    1. Copy in a fresh copy of the *.ORA files. If the LDAP.ORA is missing from your C:\Oracle\Dafis10g\Network\Admin folder then it most likely is using an outdated SQLNET.ORA file. There are two *.ORA files, the SQLNET.ORA and LDAP.ORA, that must be on the local computer.
    2. Copy the SQLNET10g.ORA (NOT the sqlnet.ora) file from: Q:\DaFIS\Special\Extras\sqlnet10g.ora to C:\Oracle\Dafis10g\network\admin (then rename the SQLNET10G.ORA to SQLNET.ORA)
    3. Copy the LDAP.ORA file from: Q:\DaFIS\Special\Extras\ldap.ora to C:\Oracle\Dafis10g\network\admin

Note: If the Oracle Client is installed on a drive other than C:, copy these files to that drive instead.

    Q. I have a DaFIS installation problem that is not listed on this page. What do I do? Back to Top
    A. If you did not restart your computer after installing DaFIS, reboot your computer now. Once the computer has re-started, try launching DaFIS again to see if you are still getting an error message.

If the error continues, contact the DaFIS Help Desk and provide as much detail as possible about the installation problem you are experiencing.

    Q. How can I uninstall DaFIS from a computer? What do I need to do to reinstall it? Back to Top
    A. Follow the instructions on the Uninstall/Reinstall DaFIS Transaction Processing (TP) page.

    Q. I am located off-campus or at a remote site and I need to access DaFIS Transaction Processing. What do I need to do? Back to Top
    A. If your computer is located outside the ucdavis.edu network, you can request that your IP address be added to the authorized DaFIS access list, provided you have a static IP address, and the IP address is not to a home (policy prohibits home offices from being added to the IP allow list). To request this service, contact the I.E.T. AFS service team at afs-setup@ucdavis.edu; be sure to provide your static IP address.

    Q. I am installing DaFIS on a Windows XP machine. What do I need to do? Back to Top
    A. The DaFIS TP application is fully supported under Windows XP. Use the automated DaFIS TP installer.

    Q. How can I test the DaFIS TP install if I don't have a regular DaFIS TP login/password? Back to Top
    A. You can test the DaFIS TP application even if you do not have a regular DaFIS TP login/password.

You can use a test login to the Test database. This will exercise all of the DaFIS TP software that is used with the actual Production database. Of course, you cannot do real work in the Test database, it is only for testing.

To test the DaFIS TP install:

    1. Select Start->Run

    2. In the Open field, enter Q:\DaFIS\Test\util\dafis.exe

    3. If you are prompted to do a SQLNET.ORA Update, in most cases you should click the Update button. Possible exceptions: If you use other Oracle databases, you may have a customized SQLNET.ORA file, in that case you may not want to click the Update button.

    4. When you get to the login screen, enter these values (all upper case):
      User ID: TEST
      Password: TEST

Click the OK button to login.

    5. You should see the Welcome to the FIS menu screen. That means the login test was successful. Click Exit the FIS button.

    Q. What should I do if the DaFIS installer gets stuck? Back to Top
    A. It is not uncommon for the DaFIS TP installer to get stuck part way through the installation process.

    Try these steps, in order:

    1. Patience: The installer should not take more than 15 minutes to complete. Usually it will complete in less than 7 minutes. If the progress bar hasn't moved for 15 minutes, you can be pretty sure that it has stalled and will not recover.
    2. If your patience has been exhausted, terminate the installer and restart the computer. Do a quick login test with DaFIS TP. Maybe the installer display got stuck, but the install progressed anyway.
    3. Try to run the installer again. In some cases, it will pick up where it left off and then complete normally. If one re-run of the installer doesn't do the trick, go on to the next step.
    4. Do a complete uninstall of the partially completed install. After you do the uninstall, you can re-run the automated installer. As an alternative, you may want to try the manual install method. There are more steps to the manual install method, but you get more feedback along the way.

    Q. How do I install the DaFIS Training database on my computer? Back to Top
    A. Installing DaFIS Training on a machine that already has DaFIS Production installed on it:
    1. Click once on the DaFIS icon on your computer's desktop with your right mouse button and select "Create Shortcut" from the menu.
    2. Rename your new DaFIS shortcut icon to "DaFIS Training".
    3. Right-click on the new DaFIS Training icon and select "Properties" from the menu.
    4. Select the "Shortcut" tab at the top of the properties screen.
    5. Change the Target to Q:\DaFIS\Training\.....
    6. Click OK to save your changes.
Installing DaFIS Training on a machine that does not have DaFIS Production installed on it:
    1. Run the DaFIS Installer following the automated instructions.
    2. When you get to the screen that says "Select Items to Install" be sure to check the box next to DaFIS Training.
    3. If you do not wish to install DaFIS Production on your computer, uncheck that box.
    4. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

    Q. How do I configure my firewall to work with DaFIS TP? Back to Top
    A. The simplest way to configure your firewall is to open access to the following hosts:

    AFS Servers - AFS Client
    afs1.ucdavis.edu
    afs2.ucdavis.edu
    afs3.ucdavis.edu

    afsadmin4.ucdavis.edu
    afsadmin5.ucdavis.edu
    afsadmin6.ucdavis.edu
    afsadmin7.ucdavis.edu
    afsadmin8.ucdavis.edu
    afsadmin9.ucdavis.edu

    Database Servers
    fis-tp.ucdavis.edu
    fis-test.ucdavis.edu

    Oracle Name Resolution
    oraLdap1.ucdavis.edu
    oraLdap2.ucdavis.edu

    Uniface License Monitor
    unfclic1.ucdavis.edu
    unfclic2.ucdavis.edu
    unfclic3.ucdavis.edu

    Connection Timeout Values
Set a 30-minute timeout for the AFS Servers-AFS Client rules.

Set a 600-minute timeout value for the Database Servers rules.

If your firewall has an option to close idle TCP connections, this will affect DaFIS TP. DaFIS TP (actually the Net8 client) uses a single TCP connection (aka data stream) throughout the TP login. The TCP stream will be idle when the TP session is not in use.

Example: You have a one hour timeout on TCP sessions in your firewall. A client has DaFIS TP running, locks the workstation and goes to lunch. Upon return unlocks the workstation and starts using DaFIS TP again. The client enters a new DPO and then clicks OK. DaFIS TP gives an error messages that the DPO could not be saved: The save did not work because the Net8 TCP session was closed by the firewall.

    Port Details
For finer control, add the ports listed below to your firewall rulesets. All connections intiated from the client side.

    Q. What should I do if I am having a problem with my AFS Client Software? Back to Top
    A. Start by checking the AFS Troubleshooting Guide. If none of the suggestions in this guide help, please contact the DaFIS Help Desk for additional assistance.

    Q. I keep getting kicked out of DaFIS. What can I do? Back to Top
    A. DaFIS connectivity problems are usually due to the loss of network connectivity between your computer and the DaFIS database. To minimize these DaFIS crashes:
    1. Confirm that you are mapping to the Q Drive using the Open AFS Client. We have found that the Client is installed but not being used on some computers. You are NOT using the Client if your Q drive looks like: \\proxy-afs\desktop .
    2. Confirm that you are using the most current version of DaFIS. You can confirm you are using the latest version by checking to see if you have a directory: C:\Oracle\DaFIS10g.
    3. If neither of these suggestions help, please contact the DaFIS Help Desk.

    Q. I am using Citrix or Windows Terminal Server and I am getting an UPDATEROLE error message. What do I do? Back to Top
    A. Insure that your DaFIS users have Create Global Objects rights. By default, only Administrators have this right. To make this change:
    1. Click on Start, select Run, then enter gpedit.msc and click OK. This will open the Group Policy Object Editor.
    2. Go to the Computer Configuration, select Windows Settings, Local Policies, and User Rights Assignment.
    3. Right click on Create Global Objects and modify the setting to allow the Domain Users group.
