Training Best Practices
Training is not required . . .
Attendance at DaFIS training classes is not required in order to become a DaFIS user. It is perfectly acceptable for new users to receive training in DaFIS from their supervisor or co-workers. In fact, we encourage new users to spend time observing their co-workers using the system before attending any DaFIS classes. This way new users will be better prepared and better able to understand the information presented in class.
Know what training is needed . . .
We recommend that supervisors explain to new users what their DaFIS responsibilities will be and give them at least one full week of on the job training before they attend DaFIS classes. This will help them in deciding what classes to take and understanding how the classes will pertain to their job. Supervisors should review the Recommended Courses by Job Duties list with the new user to determine which courses the individual will need to take before that person enrolls in any classes.
Get a user account . . .
Employees don't have to become DaFIS users before taking our classes, but we do recommend it. This will allow them to interact with the system and see how it is laid out before coming to class. See our How Do I . . . Create an FIS User guide for instructions on setting up a new DaFIS user or our DS Only Access page for information on granting DS Only access.
Make time for practice . . .
We encourage supervisors to allow new users to take time to practice and apply what they learned in the classroom before they take subsequent classes. It is important that new users not rush to complete all the classes as soon as possible. By spreading the classes out over time, they will most effectively absorb and use the information learned in the classes.
There’s a place to practice . . .
There is a DaFIS Training database in which employees can practice without the worry of making a mistake; they can even repeat the exercises from class. Instructions on installing and using the Training database can be found in the Practice using DaFIS section of our web site. There is no "training database" for Decision Support (DS), so in order for your employees to practice running reports in DS, they must have an active user ID and password for DS.
